A VEIA DE MESSEJANA
(The Vein of Messejana, Portugal)
The residents of Messejana, Portugal are the life blood of the tiny, ancient town. Each person contributes their own individual personality to Messejana and builds its unique culture, from the child, to the baker, to the bartender. Each image is a discovery, a cultural juncture. The townspeople’s everyday routine is interrupted by a stranger with a camera and a 12 ft. piece of red velvet. We do not share a language, but for that moment, photographer and subject experiment together. We often find shared humor and grace.
This project lives at the intersection of textiles, performance, and photographic images, revealing that we can connect with other people through something as visceral as a piece of fabric, even if we seem to have very little in common. A Veia de Messejana is a catalyst for finding our shared humanity.
